Boston Bruins: Who steps up with Patrice Bergeron sidelined

"It is very disappointing to say the least", said Bergeron. "It's going to be tough tonight to be on the sideline and not be out there with the guys".

"Patience is the key word right now", Bergeron said.

While he hopes to be back as soon as possible, Bergeron wouldn't put a timetable on his return. But Bergeron will be a pivotal part of any playoff run the Bruins might make.

Bergeron suffered the foot injury during the Bruins' 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. He experienced discomfort throughout Sunday's loss and knew something was up, so he underwent a CT scan in Boston on Monday, which revealed a small fracture in his foot. Thought to be in rebuilding mode entering the season, the Bruins have the third most points in the Eastern Conference. He is a team-leading plus-26.

It's a hard loss exacerbated by the fact that the Bruins, seven points behind the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning, just made a major move in trading for Rick Nash at the deadline, but the Bruins will have to find a way to deal with the inevitable changes to their top two lines. "It was tough news to get last night". Not only that, but the Bruins' margin for error should they go into a tailspin without Bergeron is massive. "This is adversity and a great challenge for us. I think it's going to build character".

Riley Nash took Bergeron's spot at centre on the team's top line during Tuesday's skate, playing between Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak.
