GOES-S launching today

GOES-S launching today”

The new satellite, named GOES-S at present and to be renamed GOES-17 once it reaches orbit, is the second member of a new generation of weather satellites that will provide accurate data for tracking storms, wildfires, cyclones and other severe weather conditions in the western part of the us once it becomes fully functional later this year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s new satellite that is launching from Cape Canaveral on March 1, 2018 could help scientists to get a better handle on the wild ways climate change is changing our weather. With data from GOES-17, and the already operational GOES-16, the two satellites will observe most of the Western Hemisphere.

GOES-S will be renamed GOES-17 once it reaches space, and will "provide faster, more accurate data for tracking wildfires, tropical cyclones, fog and other storm systems and hazards that threaten the western United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, Mexico, Central America and the Pacific Ocean, all the way to New Zealand", NOAA said in a statement. The satellite will scan the skies five times faster than the GOES-West satellite it will replace, will have four times the spatial resolution and use three times as many spectral bands.

Harris, which designed and built imagers for previous generations of weather spacecraft, was selected to provide the modern ABI now installed on the satellite that will eventually expand to 20 feet long after solar array deployment. It then will be maneuvered into the GOES-West position 22,300 miles above the equator at 137 degrees west longitude.

The countdown is on at the Cape not only for a launch, but also a step forward in hurricane safety and forecasting.

The GOES-16 provides high-definition views of the East Coast while the GOES-17 will do the same for the West Coast.

This satellite data is used along with the radar systems and helps fill the gaps to paint a global picture of severe weather events.

Better resolution means higher quality data going into weather models.

"We're seeing fires before they're reported on the ground", he said. "It allows the researchers to see the dynamics in a way that just looking at numbers just doesn't reveal - the visual impact is remarkable".

ULA is a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin focused on the Atlas and Delta rocket families, which have had 120 consecutive launches since 2006.

GOES-S will have to go through a variety of testing procedures before it can be integrated into the GOES-R program.

Two more satellites are part of this mission and scheduled for launch in 2020 and 2024.
