Defense Department Report Says Former US Army Dogs Were Mistreated”

A report finds that the Army failed to do right by some of the more than 200 bomb-sniffing dogs that served with US soldiers in Afghanistan, detecting roadside bombs and saving lives.

Upon return to the USA, numerous dogs were left in kennels for almost a year and not given proper care or attention, according to the report.

"In its haste to transfer dogs to law-enforcement agencies and to adopt other dogs out to civilians, the Army failed to vet some potential recipients", the report said. However, the canines did not go through the Air Force.

Staff members described the adoption process as "organised chaos" and that some people interested in adoption "were not capable of handling these types of dogs".

In one case, more than a dozen dogs were adopted by a private company, which then abandoned the dogs in a kennel.

The Tactical Explosive Detection Dog (TEDD) program was set up in 2010 to train and field dogs to detect Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

After the contract ended in February 2014 the United States military should have evaluated their condition and "disposed" them off according to regulations.

Reuters was unable to reach any of the soldiers who complained about the dogs' mistreatment, which originally prompted the Pentagon to launch an investigation.

Two of the 13 dogs had been provided to a private firm for use as service dogs for veterans.

"The Department of the Army did not allot sufficient time to dispose of TEDDs when the program ended".
