Trump on EU Trade Threat: 'They Can Do Whatever They'd Like'

Trump on EU Trade Threat: 'They Can Do Whatever They'd Like'”

Defending his tariff plans as he hosted the Swedish PM at the White House, Mr Trump said other countries had "taken advantage of" the United States for decades.

NEW Times reported that steel prices in United States are soaring in anticipation of the Section 232 tariffs of 25 percent across the board that the Trump administration said it would impose. And chief of staff John Kelly heard about it on Tuesday. "I am grateful to the President for giving me this opportunity and wish him and the Administration great success in the future", Cohn said in a statement issued by the White House.

The meeting included Sens.

Trump also downplayed the chaos surrounding recent staff turnover, including the upcoming departure of White House communications director Hope Hicks.

Lofven offered a warning of sorts to the USA president, saying: "I am convinced that increased tariffs hurt us all in the long run".

The split has sent some Republicans scrambling.

Congress could try to attach language to the spending bill due late this month restricting the ability of the administration to impose tariffs, while many Republicans were calling for hearings or urging the administration to limit the extent of the tariffs.

House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, a prominent Republican critic of the tariffs proposal, returned to the attack on Tuesday, saying the proposed duties were too broad. And House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady has encouraged Trump to tailor the tariffs.

Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate, said there was a "high level of concern" among his party about "interfering with an economy that appears to be taking off", as he pledged to attain more detail from the White House about the planned tariffs.

"The European Union has been particularly tough on the United States", Mr Trump said at Tuesday's joint press conference with the Swedish prime minister.

Young, an Indiana Republican, said after that meeting he "reiterated to General Kelly the need for a targeted, balanced approach to protect Hoosier jobs from countries like China that are violating global trade rules".

Automakers are reaching out to senators and governors and asking them to make the case against tariffs to the White House, officials said.

But then he also predicted a peaceful resolution to any trade dispute: "We're going to straighten it out, and we'll do it in a very loving way".

"First and foremost there is going to be an attempt to try to convince the President that he's headed down the wrong track, and hopefully get him to a point where he'll reconsider that decision", Thune said.

The tariffs, he said, would remain for "a long period of time", but it was not clear if certain trading partners would be exempt. "The economy is in a good place".

"We're working on NAFTA right now and if we're able to make a deal with Canada and Mexico in NAFTA, then there will be no reason to do the tariffs with Canada and Mexico", Trump said. But Trump showed no sign of backing down, reaffirming his belief the United States could win any trade war since it was running such a large trade deficit with so many countries.
