Bills expected to sign DT Star Lotulelei

Bills expected to sign DT Star Lotulelei”

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bills have inked Lotulelei to a new five-year contract that will become official once the new league year begins on Wednesday and free agency officially opens.

Lotulelei's value isn't seen entirely in stats, considering he's tallied between 22 and 26 tackles in each of the last four years. The team traded veteran Marcell Dareus to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, and impending free agent Kyle Williams' future with the team was up in the air-although now it seems as though his fate in Buffalo is set. Lotulelei will immediately fill that void for Buffalo.

Lotulelei, 28, has started 75 of 76 games in his career, with 141 tackles (83 solo), 11.5 sacks, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Bills General Manager Brandon Beane was in the Carolina front office when Lotulelei was drafted in the first round in 2013.

In this case, Lotulelei played in McDermott's system for five seasons in Carolina and the learning curve should be non-existent.

Defensive tackle was one of the Bills' biggest needs entering free agency, with only three players - Adolphus Washington, Marquavius Lewis and Rickey Hatley - under contract at the position for next season. Buffalo moved up nine spots in the first round by acquiring the Bengals' selection, 12th overall, as part of the Glenn trade.

The overhaul comes despite the Bills coming off a 9-7 season in which they ended a 17-season playoff drought.
