California Senior Immigration Official Quits, Accuses Officials of False Statements”

James Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle late Monday that administration officials, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump, grossly exaggerated the number of undocumented immigrants who avoided arrest after Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off the public days before the raid began on February 25.

Schwab told several media outlets that the statement was false, in part, because ICE raids never result in the arrest of 100 percent of the targets.

ICE authorities arrested more than 150 people in Northern California last month, two days after Schaaf warned residents of the impending raids, citing "credible sources".

"I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts", Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle.

"I've never been in this situation in 16 nearly 17 years in government where someone asked me to deflect when we absolutely knew something was awry - when the data was not correct" he said. "I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that". "Then I took some time and I quit", Schwab said. The Chronicle quoted unnamed ICE officials confirming Schwab's resignation but declining to discuss specifics, citing confidentiality for personnel matters.

"I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision", he said.

"While we disagree with Mr. Schwab on this issue, we appreciate his service and wish him well".

The Trump administration recently sued California for three laws it argues prevent immigration officials from carrying out federal immigration law.

ICE officials and Sessions - and at one point President Donald Trump - criticized Schaaf for tipping off immigrants about the raid, which netted 232 suspected undocumented immigrants.

"They were all set, this was long in the planning and she said get out of here and she's telling that to criminals", Trump said. Very unsafe. She really made law enforcement much more risky than it had to be.

Trump called what Schaaf did "a disgrace", saying her warning was the sole reason that hundreds of people escaped arrest.

"I didn't feel like fabricating the truth to defend ourselves against [the mayor's] actions was the way to go about it", Schwab told the Chronicle. "To say. that those people weren't picked up because of the misguided actions of the mayor, is just wrong".

While most immigrants arrested by ICE in fiscal year 2017 were found to have criminal convictions, the most common criminal conviction among ICE arrestees was for driving under the influence of alcohol, with possession or distribution of "dangerous drugs" and other traffic offenses as the second and third most common convictions.

Of the battle over how to properly characterize the events, Schwab said, "I've never been in this situation in 16, nearly 17 years in government where someone asked me to deflect when we absolutely knew something was awry - when the data was not correct".

On Monday, Schaaf applauded Schwab's decision to resign.

"It's the job of a public affairs officer to offer transparency for the agency you work for".

The DOJ contends that Schwab "doesn't dispute the number but says: "we were not ever going to be able to capture 100 percent of the target list" of roughly 1,000 undocumented immigrants in Northern California", according to a statement sent to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
