EU tells Britain to "face up to hard facts" on Brexit

EU tells Britain to

He added that "cherry-picking is not going to be possible" in the future trade relationship between the United Kingdom and EU.

Her plan reaffirmed the Government's commitment to "take control of our borders, laws and money".

Addressing the European Parliament, Juncker was cheered by Eurosceptic MEPs as he noted the UK's departure was due on March 29, 2019.

Britain has so far failed to bring forward "specific and realistic" alternative proposals to keep the Irish border open without activating the EU's "backstop" option, he said.

Agreeing a transition period after Britain's formal departure from the European Union bloc by next week is tricky, as London and Brussels are at loggerheads over how to organise the border between the Republic of Ireland and British province Northern Ireland.

The study by consultants Oliver Wyman said country level differences are pronounced, singling out the agri-food industry in the Republic of Ireland and the vehicle and manufacturing sector in Germany as particularly exposed.

"To do so, we must start discussions on this issue as soon as possible".

Kate Hoey, an Ulster-born MP for London and one of the few Labour politicians still carrying the flag for euroscepticism in the party, has voiced similar sentiments, remarking that Remainer threats of civil disorder in the absence of customs-free trade between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic are "insulting" and only serve to encourage "men of violence".

Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, warned last week that talks from now on would be "Ireland first" and that it had to be agreed before other issues would be addressed. At its core was an aspiration that Britain would stick closely to European Union laws and regulations in certain sectors but be able to diverge in others. That would be then translated into a mandate for Barnier to negotiate with London.

The EU proposals set out a common definition for covered bonds and their features, spell out who supervises them, and introduce rules for a European covered bond "label" to reassure investors.

Britain would be free to impose some new sanctions, for example denying entry to Russian individuals, but would be very limited in its ability to, say, bar more Russian imports as European Union trade policy is centralised in Brussels and will remain so, probably, for a couple years after Brexit in March 2019.

Last year, she forced Ministers to give Parliament a say before the Brexit process was triggered.

An association agreement would give "a vision, an architecture" to post-Brexit relations and avoid a repetition of the complex web of individual agreements the European Union has with Switzerland.

The other four industries to see the biggest hit from a no deal Brexit, Oliver Wyman says, would be cars, agriculture and food and drink, consumer goods, and chemicals and plastics.

After Donald Trump vowed to hike tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium, a move that is expected to hurt European businesses and the wider economy, Brussels threatened to retaliate with tariffs on usa products such as orange juice, motorbikes, jeans and peanut butter.
