Indian Wells : Venus Williams stops sister Serena in come back

Indian Wells : Venus Williams stops sister Serena in come back”

Serena Williams' return to the WTA Tour came to an abrupt end Monday as she crashed out of Indian Wells with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to her sister Venus. Belgium's Clijsters appeared to be the fan favorite that day, despite the fact the siblings grew up close by in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton. "They are both over 35, 36, and still basically playing at the top with Serena being a mom now and Venus overcame a lot of also hard situations and still playing".

Asked about the incident finally being put to rest, Venus said, "It never crossed my mind".

It was the first meeting between the two sisters since they clashed in the final of the 2017 Australian Open, which Serena won before taking a 15-month hiatus due to her pregnancy. So I know that there is a plethora of things that I want to improve on, but I'm going to start with the first few and rank them as - maybe I will write them all down and rank, see which ones are the most important and start with that.' In her post-match press conference, Venus Williams instead stressed it wasn't an easy match despite the straight-sets' score. "Even though I haven't even played that much this year, the matches in the last year count".

No one would dispute that.

Venus broke Serena at love in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead in the first set.

Venus raced out to leads of 3-0 and 5-2 in the second set.

Venus faced two break points in the next game, but got bailed out on Serena's consecutive forehand errors to get to deuce. Serena then held to force Venus, now with eight double faults, to serve for the match.

The sisters - as ever - exchanged a hug at the net.

This was their first encounter with Venus as an aunt and Serena as a new mother after giving birth to her baby daughter, Alexis Olympia, on September 1. She lamented missing shots she said she would make 10 times out of 10 in practice.

Venus meanwhile was the more solid, striking 19 winners and 21 unforced errors in the tricky conditions of Indian Wells, where the balls zip through the air but then are tempered by a slow hard court.

"It's definitely not less disappointing", Serena said as she reflected on the defeat. "Didn't really get my game going the way I wanted to". "It's good that I don't have to say that this is the best tennis I have ever played and I lost. My room for improvement is incredible", added Serena.

"So I have just got to keep saying at each tournament that my goal is just to be better than the last. I'm getting there. It's not exactly where I want to be, but I'll get there eventually".

Serena said she is trying not to look too far into the season.

The seven-time major victor defeated Serena for the first time since 2014, while claiming her first straight-sets win against her youngster sister since 2008, despite a late stumble.
