Jose Mourinho slammed for taking 'blood money' from Russian Federation amid spy attack

Jose Mourinho slammed for taking 'blood money' from Russian Federation amid spy attack”

The Manchester United boss has refused to answer questions about his decision - which was announced a day after the Salisbury poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

The statement also criticized warnings from UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Tom Tugendhat about the tournament.

Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were admitted to hospital on March 4 and remain in a critical condition and May has given Moscow until midnight tonight to come up with a credible explanation after telling parliament the government "has concluded it is highly likely that Russian Federation was responsible" for the attempted murder of Skripal and his daughter.

He told Press Association Sport: "It's not just MPs".

"It has not, however, prevented British politicians from already from making the conclusion on Russia's involvement in the matter, which now leads to punishments such as boycotting the World Cup".

There have been increased calls for England to boycott the World Cup for fear the team would be putting themselves in harm's way were they to attend.

The Football Association has declined to comment on what the UK's worsening relationship with Russian Federation might mean for the World Cup but is understood to believe it should not impact England's plans to compete in the tournament.

"Such provocative stories, which fan anti-Russian hysteria, only complicate relations between our countries and strike a blow against world sport", it added.

Mr Farron said: "If Russia is guilty of this appalling crime, on top of the information we now have of their state-sponsored interference in democratic elections in the UK, US and elsewhere then we should boycott the World Cup. But we can not just stand by and let a bully win".

The vice-president of the Russian Football Union, Nikita Simonyan, also commented on the matter, saying that the poisoning incident should not affect the hosting of the World Cup in Russia. "Should England refuse to participate, followed by Poland, Japan, Australia, it will not be a weaker World Cup, their seats are likely to be occupied by those who took second place in the qualifying groups".
