Kim Jong Un Wants to Sign Peace Treaty With Trump, Report Says”

United States officials on Sunday defended President Donald Trump's decision to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying the move was not just for show and not a gift to Pyongyang, as one senator insisted.

"President Trump isn't doing this for theatre".

The officials' comments followed the surprise announcement last week that President Donald Trump has agreed to meet the North Korea's Kim Jong-un by May, reported Canada's CBC News.

Chung said Kim told the South Koreans during recent talks in Pyongyang that he's "committed to denuclearization" and pledged that "North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests".

"As long as all sides can focus on the fundamental goals of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and peace and stability, a day of the melting of the hard ice and the blossom of the spring flowers will be seen on the Korean Peninsula", he said.

"While US aircraft carriers have taken part in joint South Korea-US exercises in the pass, it has been decided that none will be coming for the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises", a US military official told Korea's Hankyoreh website on March 8.

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press" program, Mnuchin dismissed criticism that Trump's decision to meet elevates the North Korean leader's worldwide standing. The two men would face each other after a public volley of insults, with Trump calling Kim "Little Rocket Man" and Kim referring to Trump as a "dotard".

On Saturday, Trump said his meeting could fizzle without an agreement or could result in "the greatest deal for the world", with a denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

No venue or date for the meeting has been determined.

The US-North Korea politics made a breakthrough on Friday when Kim Jong invited Trump for a meeting, and the latter duly accepted to meet by May. The North's leaders have sought a face-to-face meeting with a U.S. president for decades.

Warren said she was anxious the North would "take advantage" of Trump.

The US officials dismissed criticism that Trump's decision to meet elevated the North Korean leader's global standing. Kono said a verbal promise of denuclearization is not enough and that he and Suh agreed that the two sides, along with the USA, will keep pressuring North Korea until it fulfills the promise with concrete actions. He said the Republican president has also been criticized for not using more diplomacy to contain Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

Trump has spoken with both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe since Thursday's announcement, and said Xi "appreciates that the United States is working to solve the problem diplomatically rather than going with the ominous alternative".

'We've been very clear. that's the objective and that's what we're going to accomplish, ' he said.
