NIA raids Srinagar central jail, Seizes Pak flag and extremist material”

The Srinagar Central Jail attracted the attention of the security agencies after Lashker-e-Taiba commander Naveed Jatt alias Abu Hunzullah, who was lodged there, escaped from a hospital while being taken for medical check up on February 6.

The National Investigation Agency, which is probing several terror and militancy related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, carried out a search at Srinagar's central prison. The whole search operation was being monitored by drones.

The alleged conspiracy came to light following the arrest of two boys from Pulwama - Danish Ghulam Lone and Sohail Ahmad Bhat, when they were trying to cross the Line of Control (LoC) a year ago to enter Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) for arms training.

"During the search, 25 mobile phones, some SIM cards, 5 secure digital cards, 5 pen drives, one iPod and large number of documents and articles, including a poster of HizbulMujahideen, a Pakistani flag besides jihadi literature, were seized", the spokesman claimed. "A close watch on the entire operation was kept with the help of drones", said the NIA spokesperson.

Searches began this morning and went on till late afternoon.

Well-trained teams used deep search metal detectors to search all the barracks and the open ground. The spokesman said that the teams was accompanied by magistrates, witnesses and doctors.

20 teams of the NIA, assisted by J&K Police, CRPF and NSG, carried out extensive searches inside the jail.

The searches inside the jail also come at a time when jail security is being completely overhauled across Jammu and Kashmir to prevent militants from regrouping and indoctrinating young prisoners inside the prison premises. Two policemen guarding the LeT militant were killed by Naveed and another militant before Naveed escaped from the spot.
