Pa. Republicans push to ban Down syndrome abortions

Pa. Republicans push to ban Down syndrome abortions”

"Down syndrome is a life worth living", said Karen Gaffney, an outspoken advocate for people with disabilities.

Politicians have no business getting involved in doctor-patient interaction.

Under current law, a woman can get an abortion before Week 24 of pregnancy in the Commonwealth.

Legislation is introduced in Harrisburg, aiming to make down syndrome selective abortions illegal in the state. On Monday, she spoke out for a pair of bills being introduced in legislature.

The proposed legislation would expand the law, adding prenatal diagnoses of Down Syndrome to the list of exceptions. "Folks with Down syndrome deserve protection", Martin said.

There are now four other states who have similar laws on the books: Ohio, Indiana, North Dakota and Louisiana.

Supporters include the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg believe every life is worth protecting.

"Now more than ever, babies born with Down syndrome have the opportunity to live long, happy, and productive lives". "Instead of selectively aborting unborn babies with Down syndrome, we should be celebrating the lives of all children, including those with Down syndrome".

Gaffney was the first person with Down syndrome to complete a relay swim across the English Channel.

"People who have fought all the odds and they're living, and growing and contributing in the communities where they live", Gaffney said.
