Paul Manafort could live out his days in prison

Paul Manafort could live out his days in prison”

In October, a grand jury returned an indictment charging Manafort with money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent.

The evidence against President Trump's ex-campaign manager Paul Manafort is so strong it could land him behind bars for the rest of his life, according to a federal judge's order made public Tuesday.

Ellis, based in Alexandria, Va., is presiding over a new indictment filed against Manafort that accuses him of bank fraud and tax evasion.

"These conditions are necessary because the defendant is a person of great wealth who has the financial means and worldwide connections to flee and remain at large, as well as every incentive to do so", the order reads.

"Given the nature of the charges against the defendant and the apparent weight of the evidence against him, defendant faces the very real possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison", Ellis said in the order.

Ellis made the comment in an order he handed down on Friday in which he put Manafort on "24-hour-a-day lockdown" in his Alexandria, Virginia condominium, Politico reported.

Manafort worked for years as a consultant and lobbyist for pro-Russian former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted in the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution.

The indictment follows another in Washington that covered money laundering and working as a foreign agent for Ukraine.

Each tax fraud charges carries a maximum sentence of five years and a $250,000 fine.

Mueller's office said that it gave Manafort the option of facing a consolidated case in Washington but he declined, insisting on his right to be charged with the new counts in the district where they were committed.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is presiding over Manafort's criminal case in Washington, D.C., set a September 17 trial date for the conspiracy, money laundering, and FARA charges.

Manafort's ex-associate Rick Gates, who also worked for the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty last month to his October indictment, after initially pleading not guilty, which included conspiracy against the USA, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) statements, false statements and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign banks and financial accounts.

Ellis has told Manafort that he would be willing to loosen his confinement restrictions if he was willing to ensure he would appear in court by promising to provide enough property as collateral. Ellis ordered a $10 million unsecured bond and home confinement with Global Positioning System monitoring.
