Rules of Golf finalized, with four new tweaks”

The most notable changes made by golf's governing bodies include fresh directives on how to take a drop, as well as an alternate solution for dealing with a lost ball or when a ball goes out of bounds.

"With revised rules being easier to understand, we think committees will be able to reach the right conclusion without having 1,300 fact sets", Thomas Pagel, USGA senior director of rules and amateur status, told the AP. "Now comes the fun part where we get to share with the world everything that has been done".

During that time, more than 30,000 comments and suggestions were received. These new rules will officially start on January 1, 2019, and according to the AP are the "most comprehensive" changes to the rules of golf since they were created in 1744. These new rules will go into effect on January 1.

Here's a look at some of the biggest changes.

. (Key change: the proposed Rules released in 2017 suggested dropping from any height). "But by being significantly lower than shoulder height and by allowing a player to get their eyes over the ball, they can be much more precise in terms of the dropping procedure".

The public viewed this as practically like placing the ball. But just make sure you don't start implementing them on the course until the beginning of next year.

"But how do you ensure that randomness?" However, an extra relief option is added for an unplayable ball in a bunker, allowing the ball to be played from outside the bunker with a two-stroke penalty.

Dropping procedure: When taking relief (from an abnormal course condition or penalty area, for example), golfers will drop from knee height. (Key change: the proposed Rules released in 2017 included the existing one-stroke penalty).

What they settled on: Eliminating the one-stroke penalty for a double-hit. Golfers will simply count the one stroke they made to strike the ball.

Club golfers will no longer have to endure the dreaded walk of shame back to the tee-box. "And it's certainly not to your benefit". As an alternative, golfers will be allowed to drop the ball in the vicinity of where it was lost and or went out of bounds (including onto the nearest fairway), under a two-stroke penalty.

Said David Rickman, the executive director of governance at the R&A: "We believe that the new Rules are more in tune with what golfers would like and are easier to understand and apply for everyone who enjoys playing this great game". Pagel said there were concerns that it was too close to the ground.

"This local rule essentially replicates what would have been a decent shot with stroke and distance while keeping the player moving forward, which as we know is critically important". It is meant to be a more thorough version of the revised Rules. Players may fix spike marks and other damage made by shoes, animal damage and other damage on the putting green and there is no penalty for merely touching the line of putt. They take effect in 2019.
