Women filed 238 discrimination and harassment complaints at Microsoft”

According to the recent court filling made public on Monday, female employees working at Microsoft Corp. based in the USA registered 238 internal complaints regarding gender discrimination and sexual harassment during the period, 2010-2016. They allege Microsoft "systematically" denied "pay raises or promotions to women", Reuters reported. Microsoft denied the claims.

The lawsuit, filed in Seattle federal court in 2015, is attracting wider attention after a series of powerful men have left or been fired from their jobs in entertainment, the media, and politics for sexual misconduct. Plaintiff's attorneys are now pushing to proceed as a class action lawsuit, and a trial has not been schedule yet. Along with the number of complaints filed, human resource practices were released publicly in a legal filling submitted on Monday.

Female employees at Microsoft filed 238 complaints regarding gender discrimination or sexual harassment, a lawsuit stated. The plaintiff's attorneys called the large number of complaints "shocking" and dubbed Microsoft's "investigation team" "lackluster".

The plaintiffs claimed Microsoft "does not properly investigate or redress" such complaints, and note only one of the gender discrimination complaints was "founded".

However, Microsoft's opposition to the motion said that it spends $55m a year on "innovative diversity and inclusion programs". The blog post by Susan Fowler, former employee at Uber revealed the true face of work culture in the company that denies promotions and advancement in career to female employees.

In the latest document, which is a motion to bring the case as a class action, the plaintiffs claimed Microsoft's investigations team is "notorious... for "rubber-stamping" management", while employees have "little faith" in investigations. A Microsoft spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

US District Judge James Robart has yet to rule on the plaintiff's request for the class action status. Microsoft has argued that the number of women's Human Resources complaints must be kept under wraps because publicizing the outcomes could dissuade others from reporting any and all future issues.

A court-appointed official found that scenario "far too remote a competitive or business harm" to justify keeping the information sealed.
