Rauner vetoes gun retailer licensing legislation”

Thanks to your hard work, Governor Bruce Rauner has vetoed the two anti-gun bills that would drive your local gun stores out of business. "It's just not right". It's unnecessary burdensome regulation. SB 1657 and HB 1273 go so far beyond federal law in its mandatory regulations and red tape imposed at the state level that they would nearly assuredly force the closure of most firearm dealers and prevent prospective owners from opening new ones. In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Rauner said that Senate Bill 1657, which had been on his desk for almost two weeks, "created onerous, duplicative bureaucracy that does little to improve public safety". Chicago does not have any gun shops, however city leaders are pushing the legislation because they say so many guns used in Chicago crimes are traced back to suburban dealers.

While the legislation had bipartisan support in the House and Senate, it did not pass with enough votes to override a veto.

Supporters of the measure accused Rauner of putting politics over doing the right thing. Rauner faces a challenge from conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives (R), who voted against the firearms restrictions in the legislature.

Democratic State Senator Don Harmon from Oak Park says the governor's decision is about politics.

On Tuesday, Governor Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 1657, saying the bill created an "onerous, duplicative bureaucracy that does little to improve public safety". Rev. Michael Pfleger, activist and pastor at St. Sabina Catholic Church on the South Side, expressed disappointment in a statement Tuesday morning.

The gun dealer licensing bill was the first piece of legislation sent to the governor in response to the deadly school shooting last month in Florida. Other bills yet to arrive on the governor's desk include raising the age-limit to purchase or possess assault-style weapons (HB1465) and requiring a 72-hour "cooling off" period for such purchases (HB1468).

Rauner On Monday offered his priorities on gun control to reporters.

"The core issue is not which guns to legally ban or regulate", the Republican said. "To keep our schools safer, we could come up with ways to have highly trained, highly well-armed security personnel at our schools who are very, very talented and able to protect our students". "What it looked like to me is just another tax on small business owners in light of unfortunate events to sock us for another $1,000".
