Sergio Garcia talks Masters while on verge of becoming father

Sergio Garcia talks Masters while on verge of becoming father”

Reporters dialling in to a conference call with Sergio Garcia received a surprise Tuesday, as the Masters champion revealed he was speaking from the hospital where his wife, Angela Akins, was in labor.

Garcia claimed his first major title at the 74th attempt at Augusta National previous year, beating Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Rose on the first play-off hole. "About an hour-and-a-half ago, Angela's waters broke so we're at the hospital right now, kind of checking in".

While Garcia admitted to being nervous and excited, he noted that it was his wife dealing with all the pressure while it was his turn to watch and offer support from the gallery. I am excited and a little bit nervous for Angela and the baby to make sure everything goes well. Garcia said he doesn't feel much different - "I'm still the same guy", he said - though becoming a father will certainly be the biggest blessing in a year filled with them.

Now with some three weeks left to his defence of the Masters Garcia spoke of his excitement in returning to Augusta National.

Last year, Garcia wore the mantle of golf's almost man, a brilliant talent who had been unable to get the job done on the sport's biggest stages - the four majors.

Sergio Garcia was preparing for another life-changing experience nearly a year after his memorable Masters win as he took part in a press conference while his wife was in labour.

"It looks like she's coming a little early", said Garcia, who tied the knot with the former journalist last July.

Garcia also insisted that changing equipment late last year had not had any adverse effect on his game, as he has proved with victories in Spain and Singapore since switching clubs, and he is not concerned to be considered one of the favourites for the first major of the year. "I don't think I have changed in that aspect". "Everything looks good so we can't wait".

"I am fortunate to have had an unbelievable career, an awesome life and now it is getting even better with a win at Augusta, getting married to my best friend and an incredible woman and now having our first child".
