Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Jorge Linares Set For May 12 At MSG”

2018 is building up to be yet another excellent year for boxing and Jorge Linares and Vasyl Lomachenko look to be on the verge of confirming what would definitely be in the "dream fight" category.

Instead, a hard deal was finalized between Lomachenko's promoter Top Rank, which holds an exclusive television deal with ESPN, and Linares' representatives at Golden Boy (where he's co-promoted alongside Japan's Teiken Promotions).

Top Rank had secured May 12 for Lomachenko's next fight at Madison Square Garden, but Golden Boy is promoting its own event headlined by the mandatory fight between junior middleweight titlist Sadam Ali and Liam Smith on the same night on HBO. (Lomachenko) and De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions (Linares) have come to an agreement for Lomachenko to challenge Linares for the Venezuelan's WBA lightweight title May 12 at Madison Square Garden in NY. That issue was that HBO had a boxing card scheduled to take place on May 12 that would have interfered with the ESPN card. Ultimately, ESPN was able to tweak the schedule so the shows won't conflict with each other.

Representatives for Top Rank and Golden Boy declined to comment because they wanted to wait for the formal announcement of the fight. The move comes as a surprise considering the heated rivalry between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.

Jorge Linares is a Venezuelan professional boxer. He is coming off a decision victory against Mercito Gesta on January 27 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Talks of a fight between Lomachenko and Linares have been making the rounds in the boxing world for weeks, but there were several hurdles before the fight became a reality. In December, "Hi-Tech" forced fellow former amateur star Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba in submission at the smaller MSG Theater venue, becoming the fourth straight Lomachenko opponent to willingly bow out of a fight before being stopped. He is a four-time world champion in three weight classes, having held the WBA and Ring magazine lightweight titles since 2016.
