France renews backing for Syrian rebels but won't send troops”

France is offering renewed support to Syrian rebels fighting Islamic extremists - but is not preparing to send troops to help the rebels resist a Turkish military offensive.

From a good table at a Parisian restaurant to an airport pick up for a man supposed to be her nephew and even Grand Prix tickets in Australia, emails sent from France, Morocco, Australia and Hong Kong from someone claiming to be an aide to Brigitte Macron, the wife of current French President Emmanuel Macron, sought a range of special benefits over a period of weeks.

The backbone of the SDF is the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia which has been driven out of its stronghold Afrin by a Turkish offensive in Syria.

Meeting a delegation from northern Syria, including the Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG), a part of the Kurdish-dominated SDF, Macron said on Thursday that he hoped "a dialogue can be established between the SDF and Turkey with help from France and the global community". Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Manbij will be the next town to come under attack. "We reject any efforts to promote "dialogue", "contact" or "mediation" between Turkey and those terrorist organisations", he said, adding "friendly countries" should not "legitimise the structure of terror".

Khaled Eissa, a Kurdish official based in Paris, confirmed that France "will strengthen its military deployment".

The French official said the Turkish offensive in northern Syria "must stop", saying it is threatening the broader US -led military campaign against the Islamic State group.

The first lady, a longtime teacher who was Macron's high school drama coach, has an office in the presidential palace. "It is necessary to continue this battle together", the statement said. The French president is concerned about the "risks of recovery by Daesh" particularly in the border region with Iraq.

Macron's office wouldn't comment on the different interpretations of what happened at his meeting with the Syrian Democratic Forces.
