4 brings eGPU support to iMacs and Macbooks”

The macOS 10.13.4 update also brought with it support for Business Chat in Messages, and a variety of bugfixes, such as for graphics problems impacting apps on the iMac Pro. You can even use multiple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports to connect multiple devices. Since Apple has made the switch to exclusively AMD GPUs, the company will only be supporting Radeon cards for external support. Apple's enclosure recommendations all have 87W of charging power available to the host machine, and 13-inch MacBook Pros from 2016 or later should always have eGPUs plugged in on the left-hand side to guarantee maximum bandwidth. These systems need to have the MacOS 10.13.4 installed on them to take advantage of the eGPUs. Explaining how an eGPU can give additional graphics performance for professional applications, 3D gaming, VR content creation, and more, Apple has also shared its recommended eGPU configurations, leaving out Nvidia cards all together (via AppleInsider).

The chassis that are going to be used alongside the Macbooks need extra power to run the cards properly.

During the beta process, some cards that worked during Apple's initial testing of eGPU support are no longer supported, such as the AMD RX 560.

A number of third party external GPU chassis/combos are supported by these accessory makers; OWC, PowerColor, Sapphire, and Sonnet.

Apple says that eGPU support in MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 is created to accelerate Metal, OpenGL, and OpenCL applications. The eGPUs will greatly help in Pro applications created to utilize multiple GPUs, 3D games, when an external monitor is attached directly to the eGPU, the VR applications, when the VR headset is attached directly to the eGPU, Pro applications and 3D games that accelerate the built-in display of an iMac or MacBook Pro.

Previous year when Apple first announced macOS High Sierra, we learned that Mac users would finally be getting official support for external GPUs.
