Shahid Afridi rakes up Kashmir issue; calls India

Former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi triggered a major controversy after posting a tweet against the Republic of India over the "crackdown in Kashmir by Indian security forces to tackle terrorist attacks at various places in the Valley".

Afridi appealed the worldwide community to pay heed towards the carnage underway in Kashmir, saying concerted efforts are required to "stop this bloodshed".

"Appalling and worrisome situation ongoing in the Indian Occupied Kashmir.Innocents being shot down by oppressive regime to clamp voice of self determination & independence". While remaining silent on the Pakistan-Occupied -Kashmir and the denial of rights to people living there, Afridi chooses to call Srinagar and adjoining districts as "Indian-Occupied-Kashmir". In the operations carried out jointly by the Indian Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force, 13 militants have reportedly been killed in the past couple of days. He is extremely appalled and anxious about the lives of innocent people who are being "shot down by oppressive regime". The political tensions has also seen the sporting ties between the two nations getting severed. It is worth noting that the civilians have been attacking the army officers too.

Afridi was trolled on the social media for his remarks by Indians, though there were some from the Pakistani side who backed him. Questions are also being raised against his silence over the agent provocateur role played by Pakistan in Kashmir, by logistically and ideologically supporting the armed separatist movement in the state.

"To give a statement like that is not politically correct".

"I've not enjoyed playing anywhere as much as I have in India". He also led his country in the ICC World Cup 2011.
