United Nations court quashes acquittal of Serb politician for war crimes”

Prosecutors in 2016 appealed for a guilty verdict or a retrial and asked for Seselj to be handed a 28-year sentence, arguing the majority of judges made so many errors that they "invalidate the judgment as a whole".

Seselj on Wednesday described the ruling in a phone announcement for the Associated Press as "illegal".

In a sarcastic tone, Seselj stated: "I am proud of all the war crimes and crimes against humanity they attributed to me, and I'm ready to repeat them in the near future".

Seselj claims judges "lied there have been systematic strikes" on Croats from Serbia at the nineties.

The tribunal found Seselj guilty of inciting hate crimes with his nationalist speeches. The appeals chamber did not find a strong enough link between Seselj and other members of an alleged joint criminal enterprise to drive non-Serbs from parts of Croatia and Bosnia.

According to BIRN's report, the United Nations court "partially overturned Serbian Radical Party leader Vojislav Seselj's acquittal on appeal and jailed him for 10 years for wartime crimes in Serbia - although he will not serve any prison time".

Judges in The Hague sentenced Seselj to 10 years on charges including deportation, but since he spent 12 years in pre-trial detention the penalty was considered already served.

Amnesty International says "it is now vital that the national courts step up their efforts to bring remaining perpetrators to justice".

But mainly because he'd already been in prison for nearly a couple years, the sentencing will have no practical impact on him personally.

We won't talk about whether the length of the sentence corresponds to the crimes but we have to say that the tribunal confirmed what representatives of the Croat minority and victims have been saying for years - that crimes against Croats in Vojvodina did occur.

Seselj informed that the Associated Press on just before the reading of the verdict at The Hague, holland who "I actually don't take care of the ruling".

Seselj, accused of persecution, murder and torture during the former Yugoslavia's bloody conflict in the 1990s, was acquitted in 2016 of nine war crimes and crimes against humanity charges.
