Jeremy Corbyn condemns Syria strikes as 'legally questionable'”

Mr Corbyn - who has stopped short of blaming Bashar Al-Assad and his Russian backers for last weekend's attack - hit out at the Prime Minister, questioning the legality of the airstrikes and saying they "won't save lives or bring about peace".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has accused the Government of "waiting for instructions" from U.S. president Donald Trump on what to do over Syria.

"I believe the action was legally questionable, and this morning the United Nations secretary general has said as much, reiterating that all countries must act in line with the United Nations charter", the leader of the British opposition argued.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a statement Saturday denouncing the United States-led military attack in Syria calling it "an aggression against a sovereign state which is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism", and echoing Corbyn's concerns that the multi-national strikes were not sanctioned by the U.N. Security Council and thus were "in violation of the U.N. Charter and principles of worldwide law".

May is certain to face MPs' anger on Monday when parliament returns from recess. "There has to be a political negotiation", she said.

Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said the failure to do this "fatally undermines the integrity of this mission".

"Riding the coattails of an erratic US President is no substitute for a mandate from the House of Commons".

The Times claims the largest United States air and naval strike force since the 2003 Iraq war is heading towards Syria.

The SNP is pushing for an emergency debate on the matter.

"The Government appears to be waiting for instructions from President Donald Trump on how to proceed".

She added: "This action risks not just further escalating the civil war in Syria but also a risky escalation of global tensions".

Downing Street said there had been ministerial agreement that such actions should not go "unchallenged".

"There have been many instances when we have seen them using those chemical weapons".

May said chemical weapons had "all too often" been used in recent times.
