'Sea of Thieves' Updates Detailed in Wake of Fan Complaints

Sea of Thieves, for as cool as sailing around with your friends is, has something of a content problem. Though the basis of great game seems to be in place, right now, it can feel like there isn't all that much to do. It'll just come down to how it's all executed.

In the three weeks since Sea of Thieves launched on Xbox One and Windows PC, players have wondered about what's next for Rare's open-world pirate adventure. Increasing the variety of goals and rewards is also on the list, as is "broadening the journey to Pirate Legend and beyond".

With those goals in mind, Rare will have its first in a series of content updates ready to go next month. Its first update, called The Hungering Deep, arrives in early May and adds a new, unique event to the game world, along with new mechanics, rewards, and a mysterious A.I. threat. The former will introduce a new ship type, the latter will introduce a new part of the world with new AI threats unique to that area of the world. The Hungering Deep will be a permanent fixture in the game, with new mechanics and rewards, but will kick off with a timed event that Rare plans to start teasing soon. It will introduce what Neate calls "a new AI threat to the world", which will require pirate crews to cooperate if they want to discover and defeat it. The other two content updates will be Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type for our very own TL;DR Coxswain to sail, and Forsaken Shores.

Looking further down the line, this summer will see a couple of updates with the Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates.

In order to work on these content updates, Rare has changed the priority of the pets and ship captaincy updates after receiving player feedback, so don't hold your breath for those as they've been placed on the back burner for the time being. Many have criticized "Sea of Thieves" for its lack of meaningful content.

After The Hungering Deep, the studio said it's planning two more content updates during the summer.
