Syrian air strikes are a warning to Russia - Theresa May

Syrian air strikes are a warning to Russia - Theresa May”

Theresa May declined to say whether Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should stay in power and said talks with allies would continue on finding a political solution to the civil war.

The Times reports that "the largest United States air and naval strike force since the 2003 Iraq war" is now heading towards Syria, and that US-led strikes are expected to begin "within the next three days".

In a statement Mrs May said that the Syrian regime had demonstrated a "persistent pattern of behaviour" when it came to the use of chemical weapons, that "must be stopped".

"The president of the Republic said he wanted the dialogue between France and Russian Federation to continue and intensify in order to bring peace and stability to Syria", the French presidency said after the call, which came as the West ponders possible strikes on Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack. We have sought to use every possible diplomatic channel to achieve this. It is not about regime change.

Mr Trump said the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons on Douma was a "significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime".

"This is the first time as prime minister that I have had to take the decision to commit our armed forces in combat - and it is not a decision I have taken lightly", she said.

"But I believe it should also be a message to others that the worldwide community is not going to stand by and allow chemical weapons to be used with impunity".

Besides Trump, French President Emanual Macron said in a statement that they also could not tolerate the normalisation of the use of chemical weapons.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a scientific research centre and military bases in Damascus were targeted, as were the Syrian army's Republican Guard and 4th Division, elite units of the Syrian military.

Many politicians in Britain, including some in May's own Conservative Party, had called for parliament to be recalled from a break to give authority to any military strike.

Russian Federation has stepped up its warnings against Western military action in Syria, which it said could lead to "war".

"There has been no decision to take military action at this point".

"Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy", he said.

He reiterated that Canada condemns the use of chemical weapons in Ghouta.

Formally, the prime minister has the right to go to war without approval from parliament, but a convention has been established in previous conflicts where MPs have a vote either before or shortly after military action begins.

Overnight, Britain launched a joint operation with U.S. and French military forces to hit locations known to be involved in the production, use and storage of chemical weapons.
