Canelo Alvarez undergoes knee surgery to remove cyst

Canelo Alvarez undergoes knee surgery to remove cyst”

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has confirmed he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee which will keep him out of the ring for up to a month.

"I share that today I had to undergo an arthroscopic surgery to fix the internal femoral cartilage and eliminate a pathological fold of my right knee", Alvarez wrote on social media in comments translated from Spanish.

'DENY the wrong information published by the president of golden boy Eric Gomez.

"Thanks for worrying! And in three to four weeks I'll be like new".

Earlier on Friday, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez had said Alvarez underwent "cosmetic" surgery.

"He had a cyst taken out of his knee", Gomez clarified to ESPN on Friday night. "It's not an injury". It was something that has been bothering him.

Sources tell FightNights.com that Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO's), 27, planned to have the surgery after his rematch with unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin.

A number of potential opponents and venues have been floated since Alvarez's removal from the fight, but various obstacles - including the ability to strongly promote a high-profile match in such a short period of time - have prevented anything from coming together thus far.

Alvarez is set to face the Nevada State Athletic Commission on April 18th, for sentencing for two failed drug tests in February of this year. The fight would be a rematch from their September 2017 bout where both boxers fought to to a split draw. Because there is so much speculation, Gennady wanted to come down here and sit in front of you and give you an update and say he wants to fight on May 5.
