Delhi: 19-year-old posses as AIIMS doctor for five months arrested

Delhi: 19-year-old posses as AIIMS doctor for five months arrested”

The police arrested Adnan Khurram on April 14.

Once detained, it turned out that the imposter is not an AIIMS doctor and not even a medical student.

Khurram was arrested on Saturday after he participated in a marathon organized by the doctors, where a few senior doctors questioned him about his identity.

Police were surprised by his knowledge of medicine as well as doctors at AIIMS. Reportedly, the accused also had access to a diary that is issued to the doctors.

The reason or motive behind his act is still unclear, the police said, because his statements keep changing.

It is not yet clear why Khurram chose to impersonate an AIIMS doctor as the police said that he kept changing his statement regarding the reason, the daily reported. When he could not give a satisfactory reply, he was overpowered and the police was informed.

Financial Express reports that Khurram was charged under IPC Sections 419 (impersonation) and 468 (forgery for objective of cheating) at Hauz Khas police station and has been lodged in Tihar Jail, DCP (south).

RDA president Harjit Singh said Khurram had been noticing his activities in the medical campus for the past many months and made a decision to keep a watch.

"He even made his way to WhatsApp groups", said Resident Doctors Association President Harjit Singh. To some, he would claim that he was a junior resident doctor while to junior resident doctors, he would introduce himself as an undergraduate medical student.

Khurram kept posing as the AIIMS doctor for as long as five months before he was caught "red handed" by doctors and security officials on Saturday, Hindustan Times said in a report.

Although, the police found no earlier criminal records of Khurram, during the investigation it was found that the accused had uploaded a lot of pictures wearing the doctor's lab coat and stethoscope on social media.

There were also photographs of him with politicians.

The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has debarred a professor from guiding PhD and research students for the next three years following a suicide attempt by one of her students who had accused her of harassment and abuse.

What is alarming is that it's not the first time that an outsider with no medical qualification has been caught acting as a doctor at AIIMS.
