Full Metal Jacket Star R. Lee Ermey Dies at Age 74

Full Metal Jacket Star R. Lee Ermey Dies at Age 74”

Ermey, who typically played military roles in movies, enlisted in the Marine Corps at just 17 after his second arrest for criminal mischief. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for one year until 1968, when he was moved to Vietnam and spent 14 months in country.

But Stanley Kubrick was the first to see Ermey's true on-screen potential.

Ermey appeared in over 60 films including Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Purple Hearts, Mississippi Burning, The Siege of Firebase Gloria, Dead Man Walking, Se7en, Fletch Lives, Leaving Las Vegas, Prefontaine, Saving Silverman, On Deadly Ground, Sommersby, Life, Man of the House, Toy Soldiers, and The Salton Sea, as well as the remake of Willard, and as an evil sadist in two The Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. "I've done over 70 feature films", he said.

"We lined them all up and did an improvisation of the first meeting with the drill instructor. Lee came up with, I don't know, 150 pages of insults".

Ermey was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actor for his work on the film Full Metal Jacket.

Ermey was originally meant to function only as a technical adviser to Kubrick, but when Kubrick was impressed by an instructional tape Ermey put together in which he went on long rants at extras, he instead cast him in the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman.

He also lent his voice to animated projects including "Toy Story", "Kim Possible", "The Simpsons", "Family Guy" and "SpongeBob Squarepants". He also hosted Gunny Time on the Outdoor Channel.

Actor and Marine Corps legend R. Lee Ermey has died at the age of 74.

Ermey, who was an NRA board member, said at the time that his association with the organization and his disapproval of President Obama cost him acting jobs.

An outspoken conservative, Ermey spoke to Fox News in 2016 about being "blackballed" from Hollywood over his political views.

"Do you realize I have not done a movie in five to six years? Why?" "They can destroy you. Didn't mommy and daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?" and "I want that head so sanitary and squared away that the Virgin Mary herself would be proud to go in there and take a dump".
