Sydney bushfire still out of control and may have been deliberately lit”

That fire had spread through Moorebank, Wattle Grove and Holsworthy.

A "massive" bushfire has burnt almost 2,500 hectares in Sydney's southwest. After initially easing, the fire flared up again on Sunday.

Continue to stay up to date with the bush fire situation by checking, listening to your local radio station or by calling the NSW RFS Bush Fire Information Line on 1800 679 737.

More than 500 firefighters have been working in "very high temperatures" to tackle a wildfire which has threatened homes on the southwestern outskirts of Sydney.

The blaze was downgraded from emergency level to watch and act about 5.30pm on Sunday as conditions began to ease.

Aerial footage showed the flames leaping through a forested area, with thick smoke blanketing nearby suburbs and a suburban street at a near standstill as motorists tried to leave.

Once pristine bushland has been ravaged by the fires.

NSW RFS spokesman Greg Allen said a number of homes were impacted in West Menai and Barden Ridge, but the extent of the damage would not be known until building assessors could look at the properties.

"We have had reports of impact on properties in west Menai and Barden Ridge but our crews at the moment are exclusively focused on fighting the fire", he told AAP in the evening.

By 5pm, some Menai residents were starting to relax.

Police have established a strike force to investigate the cause of the fire, which they are treating as suspicious.

Visiting the Heathcote Fire Control Centre, the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, said: "With the wind increasing in strength, the situation is worsening but there is outstanding effort to control this fire being undertaken".

"We believe it might have been a deliberately lit fire", Liverpool Inspector Mitch Newtown told AAP on Saturday night.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Sunday said: "It's absolutely a miracle that overnight no one has been reported as having a serious injury and hundreds of properties have been saved".

"Still quite a hard day ahead (on Monday)", he told the Nine Network.

Mr Fitzsimmons on Sunday morning stressed the fight wasn't over saying "there's still a long way to go this afternoon".

The flames briefly shut a section of the T8 train line, while several roads remain closed.

Residents in Voyager Point, Pleasure Point, Sandy Point, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Illawong, Menai and Bangor were told to be prepared to activate their bushfire survival plans should conditions change.
