Gunmen abduct German engineer in Kano, kill policeman”

Five heavily armed gunmen on Monday in Kano kidnapped a German national, Michael Cremza, working with Dantata and Sawoe construction firm.

Majia said "The armed men in a motor vehicle ambushed and opened fire on a motor vehicle conveying Mr. Cremza to a construction site, killing the police Sergeant attached to Special Protection Unit (SPU) on escort duty and abducted Cremza". The road is on the outskirts of the state's capital city, also called Kano. Cremza works for construction company, Dantata and Sawoe.

A resident who witnessed the incident said he saw the abductors bundling the German into their auto, while shooting in the air.

The German embassy in Nigeria declined to comment.

Abductions targeting expatriates have become rampant in recent months in parts of Nigeria, with the victims often regaining their freedom after a ransom has been paid.

Kidnapping has increasingly spread to the north, where cattle rustlers have turned to the practice after a government crackdown on livestock theft. They were released several days later.

In January, two Americans and two Canadians on business trips were abducted before being released after a few days in the northern state of Kaduna.
