United Nations health agency: Dengue vaccine shouldn't be used widely”

The maker of the world's only licensed dengue vaccine, Sanofi Pasteur, warned late a year ago that people who had never been sickened by the mosquito-borne virus before were at risk of more severe dengue illness after getting the vaccine. Once they have that information, World Health Organization researchers said, they will be able to make a more specific recommendation about the vaccine.

THE Department of Health (DoH) has scrapped the controversial anti-dengue vaccine from its immunization program, at least for the next two years, an official said on Friday, months after it was linked to a series of deaths, mostly of children, following a disclosure by its manufacturer that it was unsafe for first-time victims of the mosquito-borne illness.

The U.N. health agency said a rapid test should be developed so doctors would be able to quickly tell if people had previously been sickened by dengue. However, WHO admits that this approach isn't straightforward, as Associated Press reports.

Sanofi Pasteur has refunded the Philippine government with P1.16 billion for the unused Dengvaxia vaccines in January. Inquiries had been raised about the security and adequacy of Dengvaxia, especially the expanded danger of hospitalization among kids more youthful than age 9.

World Health Organization scientists included that they were "completely mindful" of the circumstance in the Philippines, and have been prompting their territorial workplaces and were observing the circumstance, and also being in close contact with the specialists. Duque said the program includes psychosocial counseling, distribution of dengue prevention kits, continuous barangay monitoring and "ensuring immediate referral of dengue cases and other illnesses experienced by the vaccine recipients".
