Google celebrates Dadasaheb Phalke, India's pioneering film-maker, with a doodle”

Dadasaheb Phalke began his career as a local photographer in Godhra and went on to become a magician later on after her met Carl Hertz, a German magician who worked for the Lumiere Brothers. After returning from London with the first movie camera, he set up a studio in a borrowed bungalow. "After stints as a painter, draftsman, theatrical set designer, and lithographer, he chanced upon Alice Guy's silent film, The Life of Christ (1910)", Google said in a blog post.

The legendary filmmaker was born on 30th April 1870.

In a career spanning 19 years, Dadasaheb Phalke made 95 movies and 27 short films, pioneering the silent film medium. Phalke, who is fondly remembered as Dadasaheb, has the distinction of directing India's first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra, in 1913. Phalke was deeply influenced by the work of Raja Ravi Varma, with whom he collaborated in bringing out prints of the latter's paintings. In 1920, Phalke resigned from Hindustan Films due to differences in the opinions. The businessmen were taken into partnership so that the finances of the company did not suffer.

After the success of his first film, he went on to making more films.

Today, the country's topmost film industry award is named after him, but the country's top award has not been conferred on him, say his family, which has been pursuing the matter since over a decade.

However, the era of silent films was setting with talkies becoming the norm, starting with the historic, "Alam Ara" (March 14, 1931), and Phalke quietly withdrew from the arc lights as the cacophony of sound and music reverberated the once-silent cinema halls.

The most important accolade that he received was when the Government, in honour of his contribution to Indian Cinema, introduced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969 which is one of the most prestigious awards that are given to only the most noted individuals in the film industry. With him are Baburao Pendharkar, Shantaram and writer GD Madulkar.
