Lewis Hamilton's Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory 'doesn't feel right' says Toto Wolff

Lewis Hamilton's Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory 'doesn't feel right' says Toto Wolff”

"I remember my dad always told me "never give up, always keep going", he said afterwards as others wept and argued. It was like a wet race, and you know how tricky those conditions can be.

Vettel led for much of the race, but was stuck in second behind Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas when a crash between the two Red Bulls brought out the safety vehicle.

"Valtteri was unfortunate. I wouldn't have got by him at the end".

And Hamilton also referenced the "odd" feeling of standing on the podium when he didn't feel that he'd been at his best.

Lance Stroll has said he was "expecting" the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to be red-flagged so a more thorough clean-up operation could be carried out. The happiness they would have, and it doesn't matter if they had earned it or not - there were fingers up in the air. It feels odd to be up here but I've got to take it.

"But I like to win because I've outsmarted and outwitted and outclassed every driver out there".

There were no whoops of delight and no celebrations following his first win in seven races dating back to last October, but a serious realisation that he and his Mercedes team have their work cut out to stay on top.

Bottas suffered a race-ending puncture whilst leading the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday having run across a large piece of debris that was on the circuit approaching the pit lane, gifting the lead to Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

"This is how you must see it".

In China and Baku, Mercedes couldn't match the one-lap pace of Ferrari while Vettel could easily have won both races. It still doesn't feel right for two reasons. There's been two weird races where it's kept us in the mix, but you can't rely on those for the next 17 that are left.

"So as long as no one does anything that's obviously unsafe, then we're happy with what happened and I think he did control it rather well".

"It probably happened between [Pierre] Gasly and [Kevin] Magnussen, the incident they had, but we didn't have any reports of debris there".
