Neighbors Call Police on Former White House Staffer for 'Moving While Black'

Neighbors Call Police on Former White House Staffer for 'Moving While Black'”

But when he began the move to his 5-story walk-up on the Upper West Side this past Friday, police paid Martin a visit to verify that there was no amusing business going on in the gentrified neighborhood.

Former Obama White House staffer Darren Martin moved into his new apartment in New York's Upper West Side when he was approached by six NY police officers responding to a report of a possible break-in Friday, April 27.

"I knew that, well, I'm a black man and it's night and I'm moving valuables around".

"Somebody called the cops on me in my own building", he told viewers who were tuning in to watch the live video.

A black former Obama administration worker was held by cops on the Upper West Side when a 911 caller mistakenly thought he was "trying to break in" to an apartment building - and he was actually just moving in. But Martin told the publication the situation could have been life-threatening.

Martin worked with the Obama Administration and on Capitol Hill for many years and made a decision to move back to New York City after securing a job with the city.

To Martin, it seems to be another incidence of cops being called on Black men - for being Black.

During the live stream one of the officers responding to the call turned up the volume on a 2-way radio where the dispatcher said the caller stated that "somebody was trying to break in the door" with a "possible weapon" or "large tool".

Darren Martin streamed his encounter with the NYPD on Instagram after police received a call about a "burglary in progress".

Officers eventually determined Martin wasn't breaking into his own home, Newsweek reported. After an investigation, they found Martin was within his rights as a new tenant.

"I think someone made a very unsafe assumption", Martin told Newsweek.

"The broader message to everyone is get to know folks before you make these assumptions", he said.

The incident comes in the wake of the high-profile police shooting of Stephon Clark, an unarmed black 22-year-old who was fatally shot by officers in his grandmother's backyard in Sacramento. From Starbucks in Philadelphia to LA Fitness, the jump to call police is terrifying.

Martin said he planned to stay at his apartment and see out his one-year lease, but said he has yet to receive an apology from the neighbor who called 911 or from his building management. The NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information's office said it would look into the incident.
