'American Idol' renewed for second season by ABC

'American Idol' renewed for second season by ABC”

Earlier this week, the first live show's ratings matched the season premiere.

Perry, Richie and Bryan joined the show past year when it was announced it would be rebooted on a different channel.

Bryan will return as a judge for the second season, as will Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Ryan Seacrest as host.

Idol was revived after FOX ended the series following 15 seasons.

ABC has ordered a second season of hit singing competition series American Idol, with Ryan Seacrest and judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie set to return.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said the network never doubted the American Idol's mission to find "singers from all walks of life to realize their dreams", with "America rooting for their success". "We look forward to furthering our relationship with the network, our partners at FremantleMedia, Luke, Katy, Lionel, Ryan, and all those who audition to become the next American Idol as we continue to entertain fans with incredible performances week after week!" said Dennis Miller, executive chairman of CORE Media Group. "EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE that @lukebryanofficial, @Lionelrichie, @tyanseacrest and yours truly will be BACK with another season of #AmericanIdol on @ABCNetwork".

ABC's pickup of the singing competition ended a long saga of getting American Idol back on TV when the network closed a deal previous year with FremantleMedia North America and CORE Media Group's 19 Entertainment for a revival, two seasons after it ended its 15-season run on Fox. Ratings declined a bit before spiking with the Disney themed episode that was heavily promoted by ABC. A live, nationwide voting twist, the first of its kind on any reality TV competition, has also helped to keep viewers engaged in the show.

The rebirth of American Idol will continue on ABC. ABC slotted midseason efforts Deception and The Crossing after the show's Sunday and Monday telecasts, and neither managed to retain their lead-in.
