CIA needs Haspel to lead agency to 'glorious' future

CIA needs Haspel to lead agency to 'glorious' future”

One of the leaders of the Women's March movement, Tamika Mallory, blamed US President Donald Trump's proposal to ban.

As President Trump's pick to run the CIA, Gina Haspel, prepares for a tough confirmation hearing Wednesday, the White House is drawing up a "Plan B" contingency. She told reporters the sessions had been "great".

'My highly respected nominee for CIA Director, Gina Haspel, has come under fire because she was too tough on Terrorists.

Trump on Monday defended his choice of Haspel after sources said she sought to withdraw her nomination because of the controversy over her role in the program.

"Given (Gina) Haspel's role in the CIA's now-defunct torture program, a vote to confirm her is incompatible with any kind of meaningful commitment to the prohibition on torture and so-called 'enhanced interrogation, '" said the petition to be sent to the Senate, which had garnered 245 signatures by Monday evening, two days before Haspel's confirmation hearings. Win Gina!' Trump wrote.

Haspel herself is expected to say she has learned from past mistakes and would not go along with any future order to use waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other forms of torture.

Another committee Democrat, Senator Martin Heinrich, also called for more transparency, saying: "She as the acting director is the person who can make that happen".

None of the intelligence committee's seven Democrats has publicly backed Haspel because of concerns about her role in the now-defunct Rendition, Detention and Interrogation program former President George W. Bush authorized after the September 11 attacks.

Friday's meeting was followed by another with Haspel at Central Intelligence Agency headquarters where she reportedly met for several hours with senior White House staff, including legislative affairs boss Marc Short and press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Two administration officials said May 4 that Haspel is saying that if confirmed, she would be against resurrecting the program even though Trump has supported waterboarding and worse.

Haspel, who is now the CIA's deputy director after 33 years in the agency, ran a secret detention centre in Thailand in 2002 where inmates were tortured.

She served as chief of staff to the director of the National Clandestine Service, Jose Rodriguez, in 2005, when video tapes of interrogations were destroyed.

Her hearing is set for Wednesday.
