Mduduzi Manana's former helper withdraws assault charges against him”

Cape Town - A case of assault levelled against Mduduzi Manana, ex-deputy minister of higher education, after his former domestic worker, Christine Wiro, laid charges against him has been withdrawn, Times Live reports.

In September previous year, Manana was convicted of three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after pleading guilty to the charges after he assaulted two women at a club in Johannesburg. On 06 May 2018, I woke up in the morning and told her that I was expecting a guest and she should prepare breakfast for two persons. He had been sentenced to a R100 000 fine‚ or 12 months in prison‚ and 500 hours of community service in November. When Wiro saw a vehicle at the gate and a lady ringing the bell, she immediately opened it thinking it was Manana's breakfast guest. "This deliberate ploy is to use assault as a permanent stigma attached to me by my detractors whom I believe had a major influence in her opening the case and giving her access to the media community‚" Manana reportedly said.

He was ordered to attend an anger management programme and declared unfit to carry a firearm. She had accused Manana of pushing her down some stairs and threatening to deport her to Zimbabwe. Again‚ she responded and said "I said I do not know". "I then confronted Ms Wiro that she should have verified with me that there was Ms Sithembile Ntuli at the gate before opening for her because I had not told her the name of the guest that I was having breakfast with", he said. "She responded by crying that I am accusing her of stealing". Her son reportedly said she was often subjected to verbal abuse.

"Like any other employer, I asserted authority to say that she can not just open the door or gate for anyone", Manana said.

Manana said Wiro had contacted him, asking for money for work done over the past two weeks. "I then asked her to leave the house as that was not the correct attitude for any workplace", he said. Langa said he was happy that his mother had not suffered any extensive physical abuse at the hands of Manana. The former deputy-minister could not be reached for comment as his mobile phone was switched off and had not responded to text messages by the time of going to press.

Less than 24 hours after reporting the crime, Manana's former domestic worker asked the police to no longer investigate the matter. "We are however not at liberty to disclose or confirm the identity... pending court processes".
