NAB begins money laundering against Nawaz

NAB begins money laundering against Nawaz”

As the hearing went under way, the prosecution asked for a short recess as NAB Deputy Prosecutor General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi was not present in court since he was consulting the prosecutor general on their stance.

He also admitted that none of the witnesses, whose statements he recorded under Section 161 of the criminal procedure code during the course of investigation, had stated that Maryam Nawaz or her spouse retired Captain Mohammad Safdar was the beneficial owner of the London properties. The court also summoned head of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) Wajid Zia to record his statement in the next reference.

The court agreed with the arguments and rejected the prosecution's plea.

Maryam Nawaz's counsel, Amjad Parvez, said that in order to conduct transparent trials, the defence has to be given equal amount of time to prepare as the prosecution. However, during the cross-examination, Imran elaborated court about NAB investigation methods and policies.

During the proceeding, Nawaz's counsel Khawaja Haris said the apex court should consider granting a three-month extension to which the judge replied saying that SC will deicide the time limit.

The case against Nawaz Sharif is preceded by four corruption cases at the accountability court, including three regarding the Panama Papers, as well as a NAB inquiry for the alleged illegal expansion of the road that leads to his estate in Jati Umra.

The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017 with a six-month deadline.

It is pertinent to mention here that with the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments still untouched, NAB is running out of time.

The three references hold the entire Sharif family, including son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar as accused in the case.

The two brothers, based overseas, have been absconding since the proceedings began a year ago and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.

Earlier, SC had extended the deadline for accountability court to complete its probe into references against Sharif family for two more months.

NAB had earlier filed interim references in all three cases and later added supplementary references to them with new evidence and witnesses.
