Panic in Rome as bus explodes in city centre

Panic in Rome as bus explodes in city centre”

A public-transport bus burst into flames in Rome's central Via del Tritone street in Tuesday, giving off a huge cloud of black smoke that could be seen some distance away.

Bus fires in Rome have become such a common occurrence that residents have begun documenting them by using the hashtag on Twitter #Flambus.

A woman has been left injured after the fire spread to a nearby shop, according to reports.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. Several explosions popped, setting off nearby vehicle alarms.

The fire has drawn more attention to the sad state of Rome's public transit system. In 2017, ATAC was declared insolvent after losing €1.4 billion ($1.66 billion) from 2009-2016.

Dramatic images from the scene show the bus engulfed in flames. "We estimate that this kind of thing happens once a month", Michele Frullo of the USB union told ANSA. It's the ninth bus explosion this year and Italian media is pointing the finger at the local transport authority. The European standard is roughly 8 years.
