Report finds Twitter users shared millions of anti-Semitic tweets”

An analysis from the Anti-Defamation League discovered millions of messages that were unsolicited Twitter, dispersing adverse stereotypes and conspiracy theories concerning Jews across the social media platform.

The report noted that while there are trillions of tweets sent on the platform yearly, a large number compared to the 4.2 million anti-Semitic tweets, "that does not negate the lived experience of Jews who have found Twitter to be a toxic environment". In a report released on Monday, the NGO said that the weekly average of anti-Semitic tweets between January 29, 2017, and January 28, 2018, was 81,400.

The study, which analyzed tweets over a one-year period ending in January, estimated that at least 4.2 million anti-Semitic tweets were shared by about 3 million users of the platform.

The report by ADL comes as social-media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have fallen under greater scrutiny by the USA government, public and media for concern over harassment and their role in spreading fake news, especially during the 2016 presidential election.

The group said Twitter should codify in its Terms of Service language that "clearly prohibits hateful content" and ensure it's rigorously enforced; use artificial intelligence to identify content for review; give users a filtering option to minimize the possibility of encountering hate speech; and establish an external review process so independent researchers can monitor activity on the site.

"Our experts created a data set of 55,000 tweets which were manually reviewed for the presence of anti-Semitism", Greenblatt said in a statement. "'Trump" and "Jerusalem' appeared in our results a significant number of times that week", the ADL stated in the report.

Moreover, there was widespread expression of anti-Zionism and classic anti-Semitic stereotypes and conspiracy theories, including the enduring myth that the Rothschilds manipulate currency and control worldwide events for the sake of enriching themselves and dominating the world.
