Track laying commences on Lagos-Ibadan fast rail

Track laying commences on Lagos-Ibadan fast rail”

Speaking after the inspection, the Minister of Information expressed satisfaction with the level of work so far and noted that the Lagos-Ibadan projects was just one of the many projects embarked on by the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: "When you spend less than an hour from Apapa to Ibadan, it would be an advantage to the users".

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi says Nigeria needs not less than $46 billion dollars (about N16.56 trillion) to construct its three major speed rail lines.

Mohammed said that they were undergoing inspection of the project to showcase to Nigerians the amount of works the administration had done in the last three years.

"We see that track laying is what can be done during the rainy season while the remaining civil work can resume from August after the rainy season".

"In particular, people complain that they do not know what we have done".

Finally, the laying of tracks for the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge project has commenced, it was observed today.

The minister said that no fewer than 7000 jobs have been created by the Lagos-Ibadan rail project. Whereas a lot have been done which we need to showcase to Nigerians, " he said.

"Despite the rains, we are working on the track laying which can be done now while we wait for the rain to stop so we can move to the other aspects".

He said the contractor has two track lying equipment, each of which can lay 1.2 km per day.

Commenting on other issues such as buildings standing on the project's right of way, Amaechi said about 60 per cent of the solutions had been found. Bridges don't affect the tracks.

According to the minister, as the scope of the project is getting wider on daily basis, it is important to employ various artisans and technicians on the field to handle some areas of the project.

"What GE is coming to do between May and end of June is partial rehabilitation of the rail lines". Now we are doing about 16 to 18 kilometers per hour, so they will rehabilitate the lines so we can at least increase to 40 kilometers per hour and then they will rehabilitate both Lagos and Kano to Funtua, Kaura and Namada, Port Harcourt to maiduguri to fix another 15 million dollars by GE. "While that is going on, we continue the construction of the standard gauge so that the economic and political pressures we are suffering from different quarters would be resolved", he added.

"Every necessary concession and agreement has been made and that is why the GE returned to carry on with the project".
