Uber, NASA sign Space Act Agreement for flying taxi service

Uber, NASA sign Space Act Agreement for flying taxi service”

NASA, the agency that put a man on the moon and inspired a generation with dreams of space exploration, is going to help Uber test flying cars for the obscenely rich in Dallas.

To overcome the overwhelming millions of cars that clog the roadways and city streets, NASA is now developing the Urban Air Mobility (UAM), a smart and effective aerial transportation infrastructure where anything from delivery drones to air cabs will fly in over-populated urban regions, from towns to metropolises.

According to Stan Swaintek, Head of Operations, Aviation at Uber, the system is created to be seamless and intuitive for the rider. This is a big step forward from their previous agreement, which merely stated that the two intend to work together on the project, notes Sputnik News, citing the Verge.

Uber made the announcement as it began its second Uber Elevate conference in Los Angeles.

Riders will catch their uberAIR flights on Skyports, the stations located on top of the buildings and an eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) vehicle is the technical name for the flying craft design being used on uberAIR.

Uber first shared its plans for a flying taxi service back in 2016, and it is not alone in harboring such ambitions.

The agreement between NASA and Uber took place in Los Angeles.

San Francisco - Uber announced a partnership to study urban piloted aircraft in conjunction with the United States space agency Nasa, following a partnership in 2017 that focused on unpiloted drones.

Khosrowshahi said people should expect meal delivery in five to 30 minutes, depending on whether it comes from a drone or a human.

A video demonstrating the firm's vision of a flying taxi network reveals what appears much like its current on the ground model. Private companies were not the only ones ruling the circuit as Uber will team up with U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Army Research Lab.

The simulations will assess the possibility of a small passenger-carrying aircraft flying through DFW airspace during peak air traffic.

The auto was travelling at 40mph (64km/h) in self-driving mode when it collided with 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg in Arizona in March. While we got a good look at the luxurious interior, other minor details - how Uber will make batteries light enough for aircraft, train enough pilots, get approval to have hundreds of aircraft flying through cities, and design an entirely new air traffic control system - are still missing.
