Brexit group fined for breaking spending rules in EU vote

Brexit group fined for breaking spending rules in EU vote”

It also said that a case has been referred to the Metropolitan Police, and will be continuing with a separate probe into spending by the official Leave campaign, Vote Leave.

It said services the group received from the U.S. campaign strategists Goddard Gunster were not included in the spending return "despite a proportion of them having been used during Leave.EU's referendum campaign".

Bob Posner, the Electoral Commission's director of political finance and regulation, said: "The rules we enforce were put in place by Parliament to ensure transparency and public confidence in our democratic processes".

In the June 23, 2016 referendum, 17.4 million votes, or 51.9 percent of votes cast, backed leaving the European Union while 16.1 million votes, or 48.1 percent of votes cast, backed staying. Investigators found that the campaign exceeded its legal spending limits by more than 10 percent ahead of the 2016 referendum, which resulted in the United Kingdom voting to leave the European Union.

The London Evening Standard writes that the group, which was endorsed by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, also inaccurately reported three loans worth £6m it received from its founder, the milllionaire and arch-Brexiteer Arron Banks.

Leave.EU said in an emailed statement that they would appeal the fines, and demanded the Electoral Commission release all the information they had on the matter.

The Electoral Commission said the actual figure "may well have been considerably higher", adding that the group had presented "incomplete and inaccurate" information about spending.

It said the Electoral Commission was "unable to produce a shred of evidence relating to the original allegations" about Cambridge Analytica, reiterating that it did not work with the consultancy.

Leave.EU and Cambridge Analytica had previously denied working together on the Brexit campaign.

"The Electoral Commission went big game fishing and found a few "aged" dead sardines on the beach". Leave.EU was not the officially designated "leave" campaign group during the referendum.

The commission said it had referred "the responsible person" for Leave.EU to the police, suspecting them of committing criminal offences. So much for the big conspiracy!

"I can tell you one thing: we will not be letting matters rest here, we will be going to court to challenge this".
