Highlights of Sindh Budget 2018-19”

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah will present the budget for the fiscal year 2018-19 in the provincial assembly today with an expected outlay of over Rs1.12 trillion. An amount of Rs 344 billion has been allocated for development expenditures.

In its budget for next financial year, the Singh government has proposed 10 percent increase in the salaries and pensions of government employees.

Heated argument between the chief minister and opposition members was also witnessed over remarks against PPP leadership during protest.

Shah also said that the government will not present a finance bill.

He said it would be a first that the mark of Rs200 billion rupees would be crossed. The chief minister giving the reason for presenting the partial budget had said that the decision was taken as general elections were around the corner, adding that the new government would have an opportunity to bring changes in the budget as per its priorities.

The Sindh chief minister said that the receipts from the federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) were yet to be received by the Sindh government. Rs1 billion has been allocated to the Indus Hospital as well. He stated that more than Rs306 million was allocated for Sindh Rangers.

While the opposition criticised the government for snatching the right of deciding a budget from the next government, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the successive government would be free to make any changes.

Last year, Shah had announced the budget with a total outlay of Rs1.04 trillion.

Taking credit of higher expenditure on health sector in the province, Murad Ali Shah said that the government has engaged private sector for operation and management of health facilities at primary and secondary levels. No new schemes have been added in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year either.

Detailing allocations for women schemes, he said that Sales and Display Resource Centre, construction of women club, establishment of women complex, improvement of livelihood and well-being of Female Home Based Workers, imparting driving training for women and other projects are included in the budget for women empowerment.

NICVD's budget has been increased from Rs5.8 billion to Rs8.9 billion in this fiscal year's budget.
