Interesting details about the Patel dam owner”

DPP Noordin Haji who ordered investigations into the killer Nakuru dam.

Kenya's chief prosecutor on Friday ordered police to investigate a dam-burst on a commercial farm in the Rift Valley that killed dozens of people as a wall of water tore down a hillside, obliterating everything in its path.

The Daily Nation newspaper quoted government officials as saying the dam and others on the 3,500-acre Solai farm, 190 km (120 miles) northwest of Nairobi, had not been cleared by government engineers.

Mr Chimwaga, who was accompanied by Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui among other leaders, also revealed that 40 people are missing after the tragedy. Bridges have been swept away and roads turned into rivers of mud.

At least 44 people were killed when the reservoir, used to store water for the farming of roses for export to Europe, burst its banks on Wednesday night after heavy rains.

Water burst through the banks of the Patel Dam in Kenya's Rift Valley, about 150km north of the capital Nairobi, on Wednesday night, washing away nearly an entire village.

Residents at and around the area where the dam was located said that they could hear an explosion, following which the water came in and swept away several homes in the area as well as homes on the expansive Nyakinyua Farm, bordering the water reservoir, the Nation reported.

The dam, owned by Mansukul Patel, had started showing cracks and water had begun to leak, before its banks broke. My neighbour was killed when the water smashed through the wall of his house.

Mr Wangombe said the law requires that any private dam going beyond 5m high needs to be regularised by Warma. "We only found her body hours after the water receded". "All our houses have been ruined".

Vinoj Kumar, general manager of the Solai farm, blamed the disaster on massive rainfall in a forest above the dam.

To date, heavy rains have caused havoc in Kenya, killing at least 158 people and displacing 299,859, according to the government and Kenya Red Cross.

Wanjiku, the survivor, said at least one looked like it was ready to burst.

The UN disaster agency UNOCHA said 580,000 people had been affected by torrential rain and flooding in neighbouring Somalia, while the Somali region of eastern Ethiopia had also taken a hammering, with 160,000 people affected.

Heavy seasonal rains and flooding since March have led to the deaths of 158 people with 80 injuries recorded countrywide, the Red Cross said.
