Ireland vs Pakistan, One-off Test, Day 1

Ireland vs Pakistan, One-off Test, Day 1”

The first day of Ireland's inaugural Test match against Pakistan at Malahide Cricket Club is likely to be a frustrating experience for the 11 players waiting to make history.

Ireland first made the rest of the cricket world take notice when they beat the touring West Indies in an ODI, in 1969.

It was a victory over Pakistan at the 2007 World Cup which put Ireland on the world stage, but even then no-one, not even forward-thinking Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom, had Test match status on their radar and certainly within 11 years.

The ICC verdict in 2017 had added both Ireland and Afghanistan to the Test-playing nations, now standing at 12. "We are playing Australia, New Zealand and South Africa this winter followed by the Pakistan Super League (PSL)", Sethi told Sportstar from Dublin.

The Test match between Ireland and Pakistan is taking place at The Village in Dublin.

Pakistan is now ranked seventh in Tests and will gain one point with a win against Ireland to reach 87 points.

Pakistan will arrive at the Malahide ground as firm favourites but Ireland captain William Porterfield hoped some classic local conditions would favour his side. Despite the cricket infrastructure still in a "semi-professional" mode, the Dublin Test, is set to embrace more youth, both in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

"We have already decided, we will play the same team that played against Northamptonshire", said Sarfraz. "We were a bunch of amateurs going to a World Cup and we had absolutely nothing to lose", he added.

"The tangible benefits are more funding from the ICC and the ability to guarantee more fixtures across all three formats in the coming years that will improve our players". The game is thriving, more people are playing it, more people are getting interested in it so we've got to back ourselves.

"Naturally we were very excited after next door neighbours India, invited us for our first ever Test series".

"But Irish cricket has become successful on the worldwide stage initially, punching above our weight, and we are using that to hopefully become a mainstream sport in Ireland".

"The last practice match was very good - everything was complete, batsmen batted well, bowlers bowled well, so we are ready to play a Test match".
