Mud flies over voter card seizure

Mud flies over voter card seizure”

The row over the 9,000-odd voter identity cards found at a house in Bengaluru's Rajarajeshwarinagar has resulted in political mudslinging, with major parties blaming each other of the crime.

Congress MLA from Rajarajeshwari Nagar assembly constituency, Munirathna, has been named as an accused in the FIR registered by the Jalahalli police in connection with seizure of thousands of voter ID cards and counterfoils at a flat.

The party has demanded an investigation by cyber security agencies and the immediate arrest of Manjula for her alleged involvement in the racket.

The ruling BJP is firm on seeking a re-election from constituency, alleging the Congress harvested the voter IDs, in a bid to secure the victory of their candidate from the seat, N Munirathna. He said that the colour in the counterfoil appeared unusual, and that an inquiry was on. "Consequent to this, Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar and Ananth Kumar enacted a midnight drama to hurl allegations against the Congress party". The JD Secretary General Danish Ali stated that the Electoral Commission should be the only person dealing with this matter, while the BJP and Congress needed to lay off. Ali elaborated that both the parties were using unethical methods, which needed to be stopped so that the Karnataka Elections could proceed peacefully.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was campaigning in Karnataka, attacked the Congress for adopting such tactics to win the elections.

He also alleged that it is not one constituency, but dozens where the BJP is going to "stage-manage incidents not only to influence the elections but somehow, through these tactics with the active support of the central government agencies delay elections in some constituencies because they know the numbers are against them".

While many reports claimed Rakesh was Manjula's son, the lady herself insisted they were relatives but had "no contact".

She told a TV channel in Kannada, which was translated into English, that since she owned the land on which the apartment building stood, she had entered into a joint venture with a builder. During the raid, BJP party workers had also accompanied the MCC squad. The flat under question was given on rent to a woman named Rekha Ranjan and not Rakesh for office-cum-residence.

Manjula said she had rented or leased out the flats. "Rakesh is my mother's nephew's son and he is not connected to the Park View apartment in anyway as it is being portrayed in the media", Sridhar said.

A Congress delegation led by senior party leader Anand Sharma met the EC officials in New Delhi and alleged that the BJP was indulging in electoral malpractices.

The BJP has also demanded countermanding of the elections at Rajarajeshwari Nagar after the discovery. "Congress' philosophy seems to be "when there are no real voters to vote for it, create fake voters", Prakash Javedekar said on Wednesday".

A BJP delegation comprising several Union ministers met the poll panel hours later and petitioned it to countermand the poll. The panel demanded that the CEO take action against the BJP leaders for influencing voters.

"They (Congress) were doing economic profiling of voters to financially induce them to vote for the party. It may have happened in other seats too".
