Philly Nurse Charged In Death Of HR McMaster's Father”

Gainey, 30, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with "neglect of a care-dependent person, involuntary manslaughter and tampering with records in connection with McMaster's death".

A nurse from the Cathedral Village senior living facility is facing up to 20 years in prison for failing to perform her job, which allegedly led to the death of H.R. McMaster Sr.

The state's Office of Attorney General alleges that Christann Gainey, 30, failed to conduct required evaluations of Herbert McMaster Sr. after he was discovered to have fallen in his room at the Cathedral Village nursing home one night in mid-April. Upon learning of Mr. McMaster's death, the assistant director of nursing requested the neurological assessment paperwork from Gainey, which she was responsible for performing.

Gainey's attorney, Sharon Piper, said her client intends to plead not guilty. Gainey was not a Cathedral Village employee, the facility said, but is an employee of staffing company General Healthcare Resources, The Associated Press reported. His son served as Trump's national security adviser from February 2017 until March.

"Our father ... was a tough and compassionate soldier and public servant", McMaster's daughter, Letitia McMaster, said in a statement.

"The best way to honor his memory is for all of us to do all we can to prevent others from suffering at the hands of those who lack compassion and abandon even the most basic standards of human decency", according to the McMaster's family statement.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro addresses a reporter's question alongside Chief Deputy Attorney General Laurie Malone at a news conference Thursday, May 10, 2018, in Philadelphia. When she asked Gainey about it, Gainey allegedly said, "Well, I falsified that one", allegedly saying she "didn't want the next nurse to have to do them".

Mr. McMaster was admitted to Cathedral Village's rehabilitation program on April 9th after recently suffering a stroke. Under normal circumastances, Gainey would be expected to conduct a "close neurological monitoring", as well as an assessment in 15-minute increments for an hour, followed by an hourly assessment for three more hours. The nurse assistant who found McMaster on the floor told police he helped McMaster into a wheelchair and told Gainey, the charge nurse, that McMaster had trouble communicating. Gainey replied in the affirmative, and that "They were fine", according to the Washington Post.

Gainey, who was contracted at the facility, failed to perform the required eight neurological checks that would have saved his life, Shapiro said.

Medical examiners determined that McMaster sustained injuries consistent with an untreated head injury from falling: blunt impact head trauma, and untreated subdural hematoma.

"Instead, she intentionally ignored her job responsibilities, falsified paperwork, and lied to her supervisors to cover up this inexcusable conduct", the Democrat said at a press conference, per the AP.

Cathedral Village is cooperating with investigators, facility officials said last month.
