Man and young boy critically injured in aircraft crash in County Offaly”

The plane crash in Clonbollogue has left at least two people with injuries, feared to be serious.

The aircraft initlaly took off with 16 parachutists on board at around 2.30pm, from Clonbullogue Airfield, Gardai said.

A plane carrying a man and young boy has crashed minutes after 16 parachutists jumped from the aircraft.

A garda spokesman said there were two people on board, the pilot, who is believed to be a United Kingdom national, and the young boy (7), whose father is a member of the local parachute club.

"The plane was later located a number of kilometres from the airfield crashed in bogland".

Their bodies were recovered around 10pm and taken to Tullamore Regional Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.

A spokesperson for the unit said they were alerted just after 3pm.

Emergency services remain at the scene where an air crash investigation continues.

Gardaí, the Irish police service, said the other victim was the adult male pilot.

The AAIU set up their own cordon and it's understood digging machinery was needed in order to try to remove the aircraft from the bog, as the force of the impact had driven it into the ground.

THE PAIR was in a light aircraft before they crashed in County Offaly.
