Tim Cook indirectly targets Facebook and Google with his privacy speech”

Apple CEO Tim Cook returned to his alma mater, Duke University, as a keynote speaker at the university's commencement ceremony Sunday, where he addressed a spectrum of divisive political issues.

"Fearless like the students of Parkland, Florida, who refuse to be silent about the epidemic of gun violence and have rallied millions to their cause", Cook said.

Comparing Apple's approach to privacy with Facebook's is a bit like comparing apples to oranges because the companies' offerings are completely different.

In March, it was revealed that data firm Cambridge Analytica had harvested information belonging to almost 90 million Facebook users - prompting global outrage and forcing CEO Mark Zuckerberg to apologize.

Just before he delivered his speech, Cook tweeted a photograph of himself, with his peers, at his college graduation ceremony almost thirty years ago.

"I think it's important that we don't all get Stockholm Syndrome and let the companies that work hard to charge you more convince you that they actually care more about you", Zuckerberg said in April. "I wouldn't be in this situation", Cook said during a town hall discussion back in March.

He added: 'The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer - if our customer was our product. "Because we know it belongs to you". He was my friend, my mentor, Steve Jobs. "You are not powerless to fix them", Cook said.

Cook left to a standing ovation, thanking the Apple founder, Steve Jobs, for his vision.

"In every way at every turn, the question we ask ourselves is not, 'What can we do?', but 'What should we do?"

The firm announced in February it was planning to move iCloud accounts registered in China to state-run servers. The concern for privacy is more than ever and it seems like the companies are experiencing a hard time fending off these attacks.

And in 2014, hackers were able to steal nude photos from celebrities' iCloud accounts.

Cook, who often weighs in on social issues, also used his platform at Duke University to praise the "fearless" women who have spoken out in the #MeToo movement, the Parkland student advocating for tighter gun control, and people who "fight for the rights of immigrants".
